Dr. John Camp and Dr. Elizabeth Fisher

Spouses Dr. John Camp and Dr. Elizabeth Fisher are esteemed scholars who have made significant contributions to the field of archaeology and the study of the ancient world.

Dr. John Camp is a world-renowned archaeologist and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Professor of classics at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia. Educated at Harvard and Princeton Universities, Dr. Camp is a leading authority on the Agora, the “marketplace” of ancient Athens, and a foremost expert on the topography of Athens and Attica. He is recently retired from his role as Director of Athenian Agora Excavations where he worked since 1994. Dr. Camp has published and lectured widely and is considered one of the leading authorities in Athenian and classical archaeology. He has received numerous awards, honors and accolades for his many years of dedicated work, including the Aristeia Award for Distinguished Alumni of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens.

Dr. Elizabeth Fisher is the Shelton H.  Short III Professor in the Liberal Arts and Professor of Classics and Archaeology at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia. Dr. Fisher is an archaeologist who has participated extensively in excavations both the US and at ancient sites abroad in Italy, Ethiopia and Greece, notably in Corinth, Kommos, Kavousi, Mitrou, Thebes, Iklaina and Pylos. Educated at the College of William and Mary, Florida State University and the University of Minnesota, Dr. Fisher taught and conducted research at Aksum University in Ethiopia as a U.S. Fulbright Scholar from 2015-2016. She is especially interested in the archaeology of connections between peoples and cultures and cultural resource protection throughout the world. Dr. Fisher is currently researching the connections between Greece and Ethiopia from the Bronze Age to the Byzantine period.

Dr. John Camp and Dr. Elizabeth Fisher are 2022 National Hellenic Society Arete Award of Excellence winners.
