George Marcus was born on the island of Euboea (Greece) in 1941 and immigrated to the United States with his family at the age of four. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from San Francisco State University in 1965. In 1971, Mr. Marcus founded G. M. Marcus & Company and Essex Property Trust, which later became Marcus and Millichap, a leading commercial real estate investment sales brokerage firm. An avid philanthropist, Mr. Marcus has generously supported many vital causes related to both education and the Greek Orthodox Church, including the reconstruction of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church at the World Trade Center. He has established a fund at his alma mater, San Francisco State University, to support liberal arts students and faculty, and has been both a trustee of California State University and a regent of the University of California.

George Marcus is a 2017 National Hellenic Society Excellence Award winner.
